Archer Ceramics

Archer Ceramics is a small pottery studio based in Oak Park, IL, representing the work of Julia Archer. Architecture forms and surface textures influence her efforts, creating timeless, functional ware, elevating the everyday experience. All of Julia's pottery is handcrafted in stoneware, thrown on the wheel and glazed with much care and consideration.

With a background in design, she focuses on the materiality of the clay in combination with finishes and form that feeds her creative process. Julia works with a range of clay bodies and firing methods that contribute to her aesthetic expression.

You will find slight imperfections and marks, which speaks to the creation process, contributing to the uniqueness and beauty of the forms and ultimately becomes part of the individualized character expressed by each piece.

Julia Archer - 10 Q’s about Art and Life

Do you have any rituals that you swear by?

My primary ritual is my morning routine where I prepare for all that I want to create and accomplish for the day. I savor my morning cappuccino as I review sketches or ideas for inspiration on what needs to be done or make plans for future endeavors. It is my most productive time, so I don’t let it go to waste.

Do you have any collections? Anything that you are currently collecting?

I am and have been an avid flea market follower. It’s a source for creating an environment that feeds me creatively and my sense of being. Therefore, I tend to collect objects that are functional but are uniquely authentic in nature such as tramp art frame and boxes, sculptural plant stand made of wire. I also have a thing for vintage green ceramic bowls.

When did you start making pottery and why?

Having created a career in corporate design and branding as well as other design pursuits, I really felt this urge to find a creative outlet that was more personal but still reflected the practical side of me. About eight years ago I was determined to explore unfamiliar areas. When I found pottery, it became an immediate source of joy.

Are there any artists, writers, makers, etc that have inspired your life and work?

I wish I had a good answer for this, but I find inspiration through so many connections for various reasons. As an aesthetically oriented person, I tend to be visually driven therefore I am constantly absorbing things from those around me and the environments I’m in. This brings ideas to the surface and inspires new ways of thinking.

What keeps you returning to the studio?

My studio is my home for creating. Having a passion for the medium and being able to create work that is reflective of both my aesthetic and practical side is a gift. And I don’t take it for granted. I Feel very fortunate to have found ceramics, to express my creative vision. So, spending time in the studio is the best part of my day.

What's your favorite Color?

As you may have guessed, by my green bowl collection, my favorite color is green.

Do you have any words of wisdom for anyone starting out in the design or art world?

Follow your intuition. It may not be obvious but when you find the right fit it will feel effortless. I had the same feeling with pottery as I did when I found graphic design as a career path.

If you could spend one month anywhere on earth, doing anything you like, where would that be and what would you be doing?

Right now, I would love to go to Japan where I would be taking in all the cultural experiences that they offer, exploring rural towns/cities where you can find local ceramic artisan studios and their work.

Favorite thing in the shop?

I have been coveting the Pacific Urchin Studs that are made by Michael, the owner of Wilderhouse. I like timeless beauty.
